The Disability Pride Flag

Candace Low presented us with the Disability Pride Flag in October of 2024 when she was our guest preacher and spoke about promoting accessibility to all, inclusion of people with disabilities and the dismantling of ableism.

The meaning of the colors and position of the stripes carry a strong message for us all.

On July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act became a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability.

The Disability Pride flag has a black or faded black background representing the mourning and rage for victims of ableist violence and abuse. There are 5 colors that cut across the black background diagonally. The diagonal lines represent cutting across walls and barriers between disability and society and forming light and creativity through the darkness.

The red diagonal line represents physical disabilities.

The gold diagonal line represents neurodivergence.

The white diagonal line represents invisible and undiagnosed disabilities.

The blue diagonal line represents psychiatric illnesses.

The green diagonal line red presents sensory disabilities.

Now, Pride often makes people think of LGBTQ+ Pride. Yes, that is true. But they are often intertwined, and this is about celebrating/reclaiming visibility because historically, disabled people have been pushed into the shadows and the sides, away from the public space.

Disability Pride Month is important to celebrate.
